"Counting Headz - South Afrika's Sistaz in Hip Hop" a documentary by Erin Offer and Vusi Magubane (2006/50')Hi Erin, you did the documentary film "Counting Headz" together with Vusi Magubane about women in hip hop in South Africa? What was your motivation to do this documentary? My motivation to do the documentary came from ... quite a few things I guess. I guess the root of it is my involvement in hip hop in the last few years as just someone who appreciates the music as well as getting really into hip hop dancing. When I got to South Africa, I started getting involved in hip hop in Johannesburg - going to shows and meeting people from a hip hop non profit organisation called Imbawula Trust. I met my co-director, Vusi Magubane, on a bus going to Zimbabwe and ended up helping him document some of his footage of Johannesburg hip hop events from the past few years. After a few hours of watching the footage, I was pretty irritated and confused as why I wasn't seeing more women at these events. There were men mcing, djing, writing graffiti, attending the event. But I saw minimal women. So I told him that his next project should be a documentary about women in hip hop. And he told me I should do it since I was a woman. Then we decided that we both needed to do the project together to pull it off.Is hip hop something you're addicted to?Am I addicted to hip hop? Interesting question. I feel like I'm not, but I wonder how I would react if it were taken away from me. Hip hop dancing - yes, I guess I am addicted to it. When I don't dance, I feel like crap. And hip hop music, I haven't ever had it taken away from me since ive started listening - so I cant really say! |
